SAVE A DOCUMENT TO A THUMB DRIVE

The following posting, regarding the use of Microsoft Word 2003 and Jaws was written by staff of the Adaptive Services Division of the DC Public Library. While the majority of the tutorials are original, credit should be given to the authors of the Basic Word curriculum used by the DC Public Library’s Computer Lab and to the Chorlton Workshop for additional information and guidance that contributed to their creation.


SAVE A DOCUMENT TO A THUMB DRIVE:


Put your thumb drive into the USB port of the computer

Tap on the Alt Key
You will hear Jaws say Virtual Ribbons
Tap on the Right Arrow once.
JAWS will say File Tab Button.
Tap on the Enter Key.
You are now in the File Menu.
Tap on the Up Arrow until you hear JAWS say Save, S.
Press Enter.



File is the Menu Bar option where you want to be
JAWS will say File Name Colon Edit.
From here you can change the name of your document .
Press the backspace and Jaws will say Blank.
Name your document something relevant that you can remember.


Now, while holding onto the Alt Key press the D Key.
You will hear JAWS say Address Edit Combo.
Tap on the Escape Key.
JAWS will say Desktop Spilt Button.
Tap on the Down Arrow Key until JAWS says Computer.
Press Enter.
Tap on the Tab Key until JAWS says Computer again.
Tap on the Down Arrow until JAWS says Removable Disk and either E or F.
That removable disk is your thumb drive.
Press Enter.
Hold onto the Alt Key and tap on the S Key.
You have just saved your document.

OR
While Holding the Ctrl Key, Press S on the keyboard.
The Save As window will appear.
Note this and the following steps will only happen the first time you save a document.

JAWS will say File Name Colon Edit.
That gives you the option to name the document.
By default, Word will give you the option of naming the file the first series of
words in the document.
This selection is highlighted and can be erased quickly by pressing the
Backspace key once.
You will hear JAWS say blank.
You can now rename your document anything you want to name it.

After you have changed the name of the file,
Holding onto the Alt Key press the D Key.
You will hear JAWS say Address Edit Combo.
Tap on the Escape Key.

Tap on the Down Arrow Key until JAWS says Computer.
Press Enter.
Tap on the Tab Key until JAWS says Computer again.
Tap on the Down Arrow until JAWS says Removable Disk and either E or F.

Press Enter.
Hold onto the Alt Key and tap on the S Key.
You have just saved your document.

Exercise 15 Saving the Gettysburg Address onto the Thumb Drive

Tap on the Alt Key
You will hear Jaws say Virtual Ribbons

JAWS will say File Tab Button.
Tap on the Enter Key.
You are now in the File Menu.
Tap on the Up Arrow until you hear JAWS say Save, S.
Press Enter.
Jaws will say File Name Colon Edit.
From here you can change the name of your document.
Press the backspace and Jaws will say Blank.
Type the name Gettysburg Address 2.
Alt Key press the D Key.
You will hear JAWS say Address Edit Combo.
Tap on the Escape Key.
JAWS will say Desktop Spilt Button.
Tap on the Down Arrow Key until JAWS says Computer.
Press Enter.
Tap on the Tab Key until JAWS says Computer again.
Tap on the Down Arrow until JAWS says Removable Disk and either E or F.
That removable disk is your thumb drive.
Press Enter.
Hold onto the Alt Key and tap on the S Key.
You have just saved your document.
