Open a Document from Your Folder in your Thumb Drive

The following posting, regarding the use of Microsoft Word 2003 and Jaws was written by staff of the Adaptive Services Division of the DC Public Library. While the majority of the tutorials are original, credit should be given to the authors of the Basic Word curriculum used by the DC Public Library’s Computer Lab and to the Chorlton Workshop for additional information and guidance that contributed to their creation.


Open a Document from Your Folder in your Thumb Drive

Put your thumb drive in the USB port of the computer
Wait a minute for the computer and the thumb drive to talk to each other
Tap on the Windows Key
Down arrow until you hear Jaws Say My Computer
Press Enter
The My Computer window will open
Down Arrow until you hear Jaws say Removable Disk
Press Enter
Jaws will say which icon it is focused on and will also say not selected
If that icon is your folder press the Spacebar to select it
Then press Enter
If that icon is not your folder press the Down, Left or Right Arrows until you find it
Press Enter
Another window will open representing your folder
Jaws will say the icon it is focused on and will say Not Selected
If that icon is your document press the Spacebar to select it
Then press Enter
If that icon is not your document press the Down, Left or Right Arrows until you find it
Press Enter
Your Document should now be opened

Exercise 17 Opening The Gettysburg Address from your Thumb Drive

Put your thumb drive in the USB port of the computer
Wait a minute for the computer and the thumb drive to talk to each other
Tap on the Windows Key
Down arrow until you hear Jaws Say My Computer
Press Enter
The My Computer window will open
Down Arrow until you hear Jaws say Removable Disk
Press Enter
Jaws will say which Icon it is focused on and will also say not selected
If that Icon is the Gettysburg Address folder press the Spacebar to select it
Then press Enter
If that icon is not the Gettysburg Address press the Down, Left or Right Arrows until you find it
Press Enter
Another window will open representing the Gettysburg Address folder
Jaws will say the icon it is focused on and will say Not Selected
If that Icon is your Gettysburg Address document press the Spacebar to select it
Then press Enter
If that icon is not the Gettysburg Address document press the Down, Left or Right Arrows until you find it
Press Enter
The Gettysburg Address document should now be opened
