job access with speach (JAWS) [key strokes]

JAWS Keystrokes
The keystrokes listed here are in tables and are grouped by headings. Major divisions are level two headings. Use the JAWS List of Headings (INSERT+F6) or the navigation quick key, H, to move quickly to the section of your choice. You can also use the navigation quick key, T, to move from one table to the next. Use the SHIFT key in combination with most navigation quick keys to move backwards. A list of all navigation quick keys for HTML is presented first. These keys are also repeated later in their respective sections. Navigation quick keys make it faster and easier to move around on a Web page and anywhere else the Virtual Cursor is active. These commands are all assigned to keys on the main part of the keyboard, and are easy to remember and use. Many of the navigation quick keys are also available while using Say All on a Web page. The commands to move by heading, paragraph, form control, table, list, same or different element, next element, and to move to non link text all work while you are using the Say All command. New in JAWS 10 is the ability to configure navigation quick keys. To open the Navigation Quick Key manager do the following:
1. Press INSERT+F2 to open the list of JAWS managers.
2. Press N until you find Navigation Quick Keys in the list of managers.
3. Press ENTER. The Navigation Quick Key manager dialog box opens.
The Navigation Quick Key manager allows you to change quick key assignments or delete them. NOTE: The keys available for editing when you open the Navigation Quick Key manager depend on the program in the foreground when the manager is opened. For example, the availability of navigation quick keys vary in number, and in some cases, function, in Outlook 2007, Microsoft Word, and Internet Explorer, depending on the program in use at the time.

Accessing email in a Gmail account with Jaws

Checking Email on Gmail with JAWS JAWS reads Gmail best when it is switched to Basic HTML.

After you have signed in for the first time, you need to switch to Basic HTML.

Type Insert F7.

This will bring up a links list.

You can arrow up or down until you hear the link for Basic HTML.

Or simply type the letter B.

Press enter when you hear the Basic HTML option.

If you are doing this for the first time you should set Basic HTML as a default.

Type Insert F7 again for the links list.

Search for the link set Basic HTML as default view.

Press enter. From then on every time you sign in you will be in Basic HTML.

After you sign in you are taken immediately to your inbox.

Gmail stores emails in a table.

There is only one table in your inbox.

To get to it press T

Jaws will say column one row one.

Then will say check box not checked.

Check boxes are a tool for managing mail.

Downloading Digital NLS Books

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) is a service for individuals with disabilities preventing them from reading standard printed material. They are currently moving to a digital format and have audio books available for download.

Patrons who are registered for the service can download books onto a flashdrive and play them on their NLS digital talking book player.

For information on the NLS service please visit: http://www.loc.gov/nls/

For readers who are registered with NLS here are the instructions for downloading digital talking books:

1. Connect the thumb drive or blank NLS cartridge to the computer.

2. Go to Google and search for: nlsbard

3. Click on the first result which says Please log in and has the address https://nlsbard.loc.gov

4. Enter your email and password.

5. You can search for books by title, author, subject, or keyword. You can find magazines by title or issue date. Use the “H” key (JAWS or Window Eyes) to skip by heading.

6. When you find a book you want to download, press ENTER on the link.

7. You will get the option to OPEN or SAVE the book. Choose SAVE.

8. Download the book (a zip file – meaning one folder with lots of files in it) to the flashdrive or NLS cartridge.

9. Once the download is complete, extract all files from the zip file to the same location (the flashdrive or cartridge) – by selecting the zip file and right clicking (or hitting the applications key, next to the right control key) and choosing “extract all” and navigating through the wizard.

10. When the extraction process is finished, safely remove the flashdrive or cartridge by going to the system tray and choosing “safely remove hardware”

11. Put the flashdrive or cartridge in the DTB player and enjoy!

Switching Frames

I was in JAWS' help window the other day trying to learn how to use JAWS with Outlook. There were two different frames to navigate between and i could see that "outlook" was on the frame on the right hand side. I was trying not to use the mouse but I could not find the key command to navigate between them.

After about a half hour of banging my head against a wall I asked Patrick and told the answer is to press F6
