Using Google news with Jaws

Using Google news with Jaws

Google offers a way to search news headlines from news organization’s web pages

While a good resource, the site may be daunting for some new Jaws users

Here is an easier way to navigate the site

First press Control O to open the address window

Type www.google.com

Instead of using the search field, press Insert F7 to bring up the links list

Press N for News

When you reach the News link press Enter

A site will open with around 400 links

There are easier ways to navigate the site than having Jaws read it all the way through

Press Insert F6 to bring up the Headings List

The first Heading will be Top Stories Level 2

The heading below that is another Level 2 Heading

That Level 2 Heading will be the first news headline of the Google News site

There will be several Level Two Headings below that are also news headlines

When you find one you want to read press Enter

These headings are also clickable links

After pressing Enter from the Headings List Jaws will repeat the headline, saying: The Headline Heading Level 2 Link

Since it is a link, you can press the space bar to select it.

Unfortunately, many news pages are complicated, containing many graphics, ads, banners etc.

This makes it confusing for Jaws users to read them

There is a trick

Many of these websites have an option for a Printable Version

These versions are available for sighted users to call up a window with plane text and little, if any, unrelated content.

This allows sighted users to print the page without the unrelated content

It also gives an unintended aid to Jaws users to read the story

Press Insert F7 to bring up the Links List

Then try pressing P

The link you are looking for should say something along the lines of Printable Version or Print this Page

This brings up a new window with a clean copy of the story a Jaws user can read normally

Press Insert Down Arrow to begin reading the story

Or, press P to read the story paragraph by paragraph
